A thick blanket of fog continued to envelop North India for the second consecutive day, leading to plummeting temperatures and significant disruptions in air and rail operations across the region.
The Delhi airport has issued an advisory alerting passengers about the impact on flight schedules due to low visibility. Flyers have been urged to contact airlines for updates. This morning alone, over 170 flights were delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, while 38 were cancelled. Visibility at key airports, including Srinagar, Chandigarh, Agra, Lucknow, Amritsar, Hindon, and Gwalior, dropped to zero.
Train services were equally affected, with over 50 trains arriving late in Delhi. The 22436 New Delhi Vande Bharat Express was delayed by more than four hours, while the Varanasi Vande Bharat Express arrived 14 hours late. The Anand Vihar Terminal Superfast Express faced a delay of over seven hours.
Yesterday, over 200 flights were delayed at Delhi airport due to zero visibility. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dense to very dense fog over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana in the coming days. The current visibility at Delhi airport has been reported as zero.
IndiGo Airlines issued a statement saying, "We continue to experience significantly reduced visibility due to fog, impacting flight schedules."
Delhi is expected to remain under foggy conditions until January 8, with light rain predicted on January 6. The temperature in Delhi on Saturday morning was recorded at 10 degrees Celsius.
According to IMD, a "cold day" is when the minimum temperature is under 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum or lowest temperature is at least 4.5 degrees below normal.
